According to Capt. Richard Conklin, agents in Narcotics and Organized Crime squad received a tip Thursday about the car, transporting the guns in the Glenbrook Road area, prompting them to stake out the region.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Conklin said the driver took off and one the car's occupants jumped out and ran with a backpack toward Julia A. Stark Elementary School.
The agents, who put out a call for help from the uniformed division, quickly notified school officials who went into an immediate lockdown, said Conklin.
"I have to say it was a perfect reaction by the patrol officers who were able to help with the chase, apprehend the driver and the school lockdown," Conklin said.
Conklin said officers were able to grab Daquan Wright, 21, of Stamford, who had thrown the backpack over a fence. An inspection of the backpack turned up a 9-mm Ruger semiautomatic pistol, a seven-shot Ruger 357 revolver, and a Smith & Wesson five-shot 38-caliber revolver, in addition to marijuana.
“We are very proud of the fact we were able the unit was able to obtain this intel, act on it in a very prudent and reasonable manner and stop what could have been a very dangerous situation," Conklin said.
School officials were notified after the apprehension. No children were hurt or in danger at any time, he added.
The guns had not been reported missing or stolen, but a search of serial numbers turned up the owner who had no idea they had been stolen, Conklin said.
Investigators are working to determine how the guns were stolen.
Wright was charged with three counts each of illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a firearm on school property, in addition to a host of other charges. He is being held on $300,000 bond.
"He (Wright) is in some serious trouble because he already had a protective warrant against him and now he had weapons on school property," Conklin added.
The driver, Shyheim Bonaparte, 23, of Stamford, was charged with driving without a license, engaging police in pursuit, and other charges. He is being held on $25,000 bond.
